Abstract | The National Mission on Education through ICT is a Ministry of Human Resources Development MHRD funded program in India. As part of this there are several thrust areas including one on Adaptation and deployment of open source simulation packages equivalent to MATLAB, ORCAD etc. As part of this, IIT Bombay has proposed a project on Adoption of Open Source Software in Science and Engineering Education. There are two major areas of focus in this project one employing Scilab and another on Python which the author is leading. The eventual goal is to minimize the use of commercial tools in Indian science and engineering education at the college level. This project started in May 2009 and will run initially for three years. The project on Python will consist of the following components: * Creation of new courses along with relevant material in the form of videos, lecture material, teaching material, examples, tests etc., * Conversion of existing course content that use closed source and proprietary tools to Python based ones. We provide a brief overview of the other programs that are part of the national mission on education and then outline the efforts we are taking as part of this particular project involving Python. |

Does this program provide a mechanism for volunteers to contribute towards the effort? Is there some lightweight web based collaboration system to contribute in this project? ..
