Deploying & Understanding OpenStack Swift.

Objective

OpenStack Swift is the Object storage component of OpenStack Cloud computing project. Its written in Python like all other component & currently used by wikipedia, rackspace and many others.

Goal of the workshop:--

Understanding

   1. Swift Object Storage.

   2. Installation procedure

    3. Playing with Swift API

   4. Q/A

Take Away

Familiarity/understanding with overall OpenStack Swift project.

Description

The workshop will be divided into four sections..

a. Introduction to Openstack Swift & components. [40 mins]

-- What is object storage

-- What is OpenStack Swift

-- Components of OpenStack Swift

-- Companies working/using OpenStack Swift

b. Deploying OpenStack Swift or walking through deployment procedure [60 mins]

-- Incase of slow internet connection we will walk through the deployment steps in the image bunded with swift. The complete image will be provided two-three weeks prior to event so attendees can download/install & come with working setup.

-- Else with simple bash script we will install Openstack Swift on Ubuntu 12.04 which attendees will bring installed via virtualbox on their laptop.

c. Working with swift API [30 mins]

-- We will take some example & do basic operation on Swift using the API.

d. Q/A [20 mins]

-- Will be taking up all your questions.

Requirements

  1. Come with virtualbox installed and running ubuntu 12.04 [Attendees]
  2. Good internet connection(if possible) [Organizers]
  3. Bundled distribution with Swift installed will also be provided few weeks in advance, so attendees can come with it installed on their laptop. As a backup plan incase of slow internet connection. [Attendees] [Speaker]
  4. Links section has a blog where i have explained about my previous workshop on OpenStack Swift with everything. I will be updating it for this workshop.

NOTE

I have done most of my workshop using Ubuntu(install packages), so even if you are not a ubuntu user you can attend the workshop as the objective of the workshop is to train/teach/familiarize you with overall OpenStack Swift project. One can later replicate the installation procedure on his favourite distribution.

    Please add a link to the published API for OpenStack Swift so that your intended audience will be able to familiarize themselves with the basic operations. Additionally, please provide links to installations/configurations for distributions other than Ubuntu. It is possible that your audience may not desire to learn this off Ubuntu and, since you'd be demonstrating the capabilities of the API, the underlying platform should ideally not matter much.

    Also, please add the intended take-away from your session.
