PiDoorbell - Instantaneous Video Notifications with Arduino & RaspberryPi

Objective

Have you ever found yourself obsessively checking the UPS or FedEx tracking site to see if your package finally got delivered at your doorstep? Or wondered when your contractor/gardener showed up to do their job? Or if your neighbor came looking for you on an urgent matter while you were out?

In this talk, I will show you how you can relax and rely on your handy-dandy smartphone to let you know when these events happen along with video snippets of what happened and who showed up!

Description

Arduino’s and RaspberryPi’s are the new frontier in enabling regular developers like you and me get access to an affordable and easy-to-program platform to build cool things. In this talk, I will present how to use Arduino’s, RaspberryPi’s and your smartphone to be notified of an event that you want to know about – whether you’re at home, work or a conference halfway across the world.

The talk will include a brief overview of Arduino, RaspberryPi and my setup (proximity sensor, camera and other hardware). I will then present how I built the initial gadget and then tied it into my smartphone that will notify me of an event happening along with a video snippet of activity at the front door.

Finally, I will wrap up with a live demo of the project and Q&A, if possible. In the interests of time, I could show a video of the project working in real life (2-3 min) instead.

I have presented this talk at PyCon USA, Australia, USENIX, OSCON - all videos are online.

Requirements

This is not a workshop - it is a technical talk. I need about 45 minutes including Q&A.

Some things I need:

  • 4G wifi connection - faster == better
  • A small table with power - for the hardware for my live demo
  • If possible, a separate camera for my hardware and to show the notifications on my iPhone. This is so the audience can see the final result.
  • An LAV mic is preferred since I need both hands to type and run my code for the demo - also, hardware setup etc.

Speaker bio

Rupa Dachere is the Founder and President of CodeChix.org, a CA non-profit organization with chapters across USA. She is also a Member of Technical Staff at VMware working on vSphere. She has been a software developer and tinkerer for two decades and loves to learn new technologies and build new skills. This is her first hardware project and she would like to show that you CAN build your own gadgets and solve your daily needs without having to spend a whole bunch of money on a commercial product which might not give you all the features you need. She is a homeowner and plans to use this gadget everyday at home to see who’s at her front door.
