Motivating Women towards Software Engineering Education and Career

Science recognizes that diversity is important to innovation, problem-solving and creativity and several researchers suggest that cognitively diverse teams perform better on hard problems. And more importantly, Women might be better CODERS. It is to be noted that code written by women was approved at a higher rate that is 78.7% that code written by men (74.6%).Companies have greater potential to grow in quality and quantity if they work to add more women to their staff, this happens only if they are provided with proper encouragement and opportunities to educate in software domain. There are many programs taken up and one of them include project WISE (Women In Software Engineering). It is a training program offered to the women students pursing technical education at educational institutions. The focus is to build a complement of skills to make the women participants confident and compliment in the IT Service /Product industry and develop a resume with verifiable expertise and experience, relevant for multinational software organizations Majority of the students had utilized this WISE program and had made their career successful in technical domain. Internships were also offered by the giant companies to the students at learning stage. This had provided them with industrial exposure at student level. The WISE program has been successfully running for the past 7 years imparting current technologies. Open source software are also introduced to the students to pursue projects. Women students are successful with flying colors in their life by this program. Such a one can also be recommended to other technical educational institutions.
