From REST to GraphQL: Transforming API Development with Python and Graphene

Allen Y (~allen8)

APIs are the backbone of modern web and mobile applications, and the shift from REST to GraphQL represents a significant evolution in how we interact with data. This session will begin by contrasting REST and GraphQL, highlighting the limitations of traditional RESTful APIs and the advantages offered by GraphQL in terms of flexibility, efficiency, and performance.

We will then dive into Graphene, a powerful Python library that simplifies the development of GraphQL APIs. Through a series of hands-on examples and live coding, attendees will learn how to define GraphQL schemas, create queries and mutations, and handle complex data relationships. The session will also cover advanced topics such as integrating with various databases, implementing robust authentication and authorization mechanisms, and optimizing API performance for scalability.

By the end of this session, participants will have a comprehensive understanding of how to transition from REST to GraphQL, and how to harness the full potential of Graphene to build modern, high-performance APIs using Python.

Attendees should have: 1. Basic knowledge of Python programming. 2. Understanding of web development and RESTful API concepts. 3. Familiarity with API design and its role in modern applications. 4. (Optional but beneficial) Basic understanding of databases and data management.
