Python for Science and Engineering workshop by FOSSEE

The FOSSEE team from IIT Bombay is conducting a workshop on "Python for Science and Engineering" as a special track at PyCON India 2010.

The workshop is completely hands-on and FOSSEE team expects each of the participant to have an access to a computer. So if you are planning to attend the workshop please carry your own laptop for the workshop with all the following packages installed.

  1. If you are a Linux user please make sure the following packages are installed:

    • IPython
    • Matplotlib
    • Numpy
    • Scipy
    • Pylab
    • MayaVi If you use Ubuntu or any other Debian based installations you can run the following command to install the packages mentioned above: sudo apt-get install ipython python-matplotlib python-numpy python-scipy mayavi2
  2. Windows users can download and install Enthought Python Distribution(EPD) from the Enthought website. EPD comes bundled with all the Python related packages necessary for the workshop. The free to use academic version can be downloaded from here: http://www.enthought.com/products/edudownload.php

Both Windows and Linux users can download and install the Sage package as described here: http://sagemath.org/download.html

Please make sure all these packages are installed before you come for the workshop since the organizers will not be in a position to install these packages for you on the spot because of the time constraints.

The FOSSEE team has also created their own Linux distribution which comes bundled with all the packages required for the workshop pre-installed. This distribution of Linux is based on Ubuntu 10.04. If you would like to give it a spin, you can download the iso from their website at: http://fossee.in/files/iso/LivePython-10.09-i386.iso.

There is no extra registration charge to attend the workshop.
